I was born in 1941. One of my earliest memories was sleeping under the table one Christmas during the War, where we had to go 鈥渇or safety鈥.
I remember being very excited to receive a tiny doll which I call Charlie. I had to wait until I was seven or eight years old to receive a proper size doll, as during the War factories and workers were required to used for more important things than dolls.
Another wartime memory I have of being under the table was when my friend and I were sitting silently with the table cloth pulled right down so that we could not be seen. Apparently we sat there for ages, not saying a word. When my mother asked what we were doing we replied that we were playing air-raids. Quite poignant, I think.
I think that I am glad that my children and grandchildren did not have to play that game.
