I was born in Blackwood, South Wales in 1936. I have a vague memory of the war. I can remember sitting under the stairs during air raids, although they were a long way away and sitting in the bedroom watching the glow of the fires in Cardiff. I can remember going into Cardiff on the Bus and seeing the devastation. We had some Americans based close to Blackwood and my parents used to invite some of them home for supper. We also used to go to the park to watch them fly their planes. My father was a schoolmaster and special constable and was therefore out most evenings. The end of the war I remember quite well and we had street parties and lots of celebrations.
