This story was submitted to the Peoples War site by Mr Maloney was a Checker in the dispatch department of Ayrton-Saunders where he spent his working life from 1911 at the age of fourteen.
In younger and more spirited days Mr Maloney was a very keen footballer and his efforts for the company team are well remembered by his older colleagues in the firm.
He is married (his wife too, was employed by the company) with two sons, two daughters and seven grandchildren.
When asked about hobbies he replied expansively, 鈥渉ome comforts鈥 and went on to explain that he is very fond of relaxing before the television set or listening to the radio. Further prodding however revealed that he is even fonder of gardening 鈥 and especially his greenhouse.
Whatever the problems of occupying leisure time, they are unlikely to bother Mr. Maloney for some time to come, for he is continuing his work as a checker and has made no plans for retirement.
We take this opportunity of wishing Mr. Maloney and his family every possible success and happiness in the future.
During World War II Mr. Maloney had to walk to and from work, even during air raids as the trams were not on during the war due to bomb damage. He also did Fire-watch on the roof of the factory to put out any incendiaries with buckets of sand. He鈥檇 be up at about 5 o鈥檆lock in the morning to clean out the fire and get it ready for his wife, and then leave to walk to work.
