My grand mother sadly passed last April but we are for ever laughing about her amazing stories from the war.

She drove an ambulance called The Green Goddess for several years in and around of Liverpool. She maintained up to the week before she died that the reason she drove so fast and could shift gear like a mad woman was because of driving the injured to the tunnel as the nearest bomb shelter during bombing raids.

She refused to have an automatic car for the same reason much to my mother's despair. She would tell us how her mother was most annoyed because she would bribe the family butler( who was too old to enlist) to ride shot gun with her when he was needed for more important work for the Ministry because he would help her change a tire quickly when they got a flat running over debris. He was well into his 60s but it made his week.

She was locked in her room when my grandfather wanted to marry her as my great grand parents thought it a foolish match with the war and he was a career officer. She bribed the same butler to have the family car ready, climbed out of her window and went down the drain pipe to run off with Grand father Richard. They were married the next day in London and were happily married for 18 months before he was killed near Caen, France.
