In 1939 I lived in Manchester and attended Harpurhey High School. We were evacuated to Darwen near Blackburn. I stayed with a middle-aged couple (the man was a teacher). I had the feeling that I was not welcome as the couple wanted a small child like their own.
My parents took me home. My father considered that to be sent to Darwen was stupid since next door, in Blackburn, was an arms factory that could have been bombed.
