I was 17 years old and so excited. The end of the War had been talked about for months and now it was here. I went out with friends to Newcastle upon Tyne and, with thousands of others, we danced in the streets.

There were many Free French, Americans and Royal Navy personnel sharing cigarettes, sweets, kisses and hugs. That night we switched on all the lights in house and kept the curtains open - blackout was over and we all went out to see the lights in every house and everywhere - it was magic! The church bells were ringing too.

Message 1 - What a day that was

Posted on: 08 May 2005 by Frank Mee Researcher 241911

Hello Joan,
What a day that was and as fresh in my memory as ever sixty years after.
I wrote my story of that day as a sixteen year old and had forgotten we switched all the lights on and left the curtains open. Maybe I was so excited at having kissed more girls in five minutes than in all my life up to then.
I do remember mother calling us in to tea war over or not and we had Del Monte Peaches from her can store with Carnation Cream, what a treat, she had saved it for the day from the box of goodies we got every six months from our relatives in New Zealand.
"Its Over" VE Day in Stockton on Tees is my story and is A2097867 just click on that number if you are interested and it will pop up.
Thanks for the memory.
Regards Frank.
