When the news of the end of the war came to Wigan, I was 4 years of age and can remember being dressed in my siren suit and carried on my uncle’s shoulders down Park Road.
Everyone was celebrating, singing and dancing. A bonfire had been lit in the middle of the road and was melting the tarmac. A piano was wheeled out of a house and the party really got started. I clearly remember everyone being happy and smiling and everyone hugging. There was an overwhelming feeling of relief and joy — I’ll never forget it!
