I remember air raids in Gourock throughout WW2. One night in particular I remember Shore Street and Cardwell Bay being hit. I think it might have been 1940 when I was in Primary 1 at school.
The next morning we awoke to carnage. There was rubble all over the street but my mum insisted that I go to school even though we'd been up all night. The atmosphere in the street was very creepy. There was nobody about and many people had been made homeless (my mother later took in one of the homeless couples). When I arrived at school there was nobody there apart from the teachers. All the other families in Gourock had kept their children at home for the day!
