I was at school during the war.
My mother and father were guardsmen at a park. The tennis courts were taken over by the R.A.F. We were living in the confines of the barrage balloon in the tennis courts, as we lived in the tennis area.
I was about 5 or 6, I became their mascot. I had a uniform made, and I used to get paid sixpence. I used to help them and tie the barrage balloons down, I was only 5 but I would tell the new recruits how to tie it.
One day, I didn't let go. I was about 10 foot or more up and had to drop into someone's arms.
I can remember the Doodlebugs; how the ground had been demolished near to the tennis courts because of them.
One day, the barrage balloon had stopped an aircraft or it had been shot at and it caught fire. Remains were left around the tennis court.
Incendary bombs had dropped on houses. One went through the pavilion in the tennis court and made a hole.
The tennis court became a school after the war and I had to move out.
