I want to tell you about my uncle,7951193 Pte.WALTER GLEDHILL.He was born in Huddersfield on 11th June 1923 and served with the 6th Battalion Yorks.and Lancaster regiment from 20/06/43 to 17/09/44,having been transferred from the West Yorks.regiment,No2 Northern Command Infantry Depot and H.Q.9th Corps. His Overseas service includes,North Africa 21/02/43-15/03/44,Middle East Force 16/03/44-26/06/44,North Africa/Italy 27/06/44-17/09/44. Sadly he was killed in the line of duty on 17/09/44 in Italy at the age of 21 and is buried in Coriano Ridge war cemetery,Italy. My Mother(His Sister) was only 11 years old at the time. Back in May 1999,I visited his grave and I am proud and honoured to be his only relative to do so. Whilst there I presented his medals to him. The 1939-45 Star,The Africa Star,The Italy Star and the 1939-45 War Medal. It wasan ambition I'd had from a very young age.Maybe someone out there happened to serve with him or just had the privilage of knowing him. It's a privilage I would so much liked to have had.
