I joined the Territorial Army six weeks before war started. So I was called up with the TA when war was declared. I falsified my age; told them I was seventeen when i was really sixteen. I was in the 5th Battalion, Folkestone.

When the war started I was swimming in Dover during the first air raid. Because everything was new, we sheltered in the cliffs which was the military thing to do.

Like everybody else, I didn't know what to do; you take it as it comes.
