I was in the garden with my daughter in her pram when the Doodle Bugs came over. The engine stopped so I grabbed the pram and rushed indoors. Fortunately, it did not come straight down but glided and landed about two miles away. My baby daughter slept by an open window and used to watch the flashes and laughed when there were bombs going off. Fortunately, no one was hurt.
Another time a cousin who had a young baby took him to the air raid shelter and found she had left some baby things indoors so went back into the house to fetch them. While she was gone the air raid shelter was hit, and the baby was killed.
My cousin was in Palestine working, so he sent his wife and children away, but on the way the ship was bombed, his wife gave the eldest boy to a sailor but jumped overboard with the two younger children. The eldest boy was never heard of again.
