I joined the WAAF just after I was eighteen. H.Q. No.85., was the first contingent of WAAF to be posted to Normandy after D Day. I was Cpl.Clk/GD (Tech) and was one of the first WAAF to be posted to this group to work for The Group Captain for whom I had worked since I joined. I was stationed at HQFC at RAF Bentley Priory and on Saturday 19th February was posted to HQ No 85 Group at Uxbridge.
Before we went abroad other WAAF were posted to the unit - about thirty five all together - all different trades. We shared the top floor of Somme Block at Uxbridge with members of the WAAC of the USAAF. I couldn't understand why these girls went to the ablutions wearing their tin hats - so I asked - they were wearing them to take a shower! While we had three pairs of grey lisle stockings, they had rows of nylons draped over their radiators!
They too were waiting to go to the Continent - they were a great bunch and we all got on well together.
