I was 7yrs old when The Second World War broke out.
They had started to build shelters at school but they were not finished. We had to stay at home until the school shelters were finished ( we had lots of fun but didn't have any lessons!)
When we went back to school the shelters were ready. Some days we spent a lot of time in the shelters (but we did not have any lessons in them).
The rule was if you were travelling between home and school (we went home at dinner time as well then as there were no school meals) and the siren sounded - if you were nearer home you went to your home shelter but if you were nearer school you were to go to the school shelters.
I can only remember the siren sounding once when we were on our way to or from school.
This was one dinner time about 1942 we were walking back to school in a group (about 5 or 6) just as we reached the school gates - we had not gone through them - the siren sounded. No one said anything to each other but we all just turned round and set off back home.
