My dear Joan and Frank
Just a line to let you know we are alright after 4 nights of Jerry planes and hell. A few more nights like we have had and Liverpool will be no more. Sat night was beyond any description. Jerry had Liverpool in a ring of fires. They plastered us. The docks and the Clarence were raging. Lewis’ is only a shell. Black has all gone and the whole block. British Home Stores. Stoniers. The Art Gallery. Mill Road Hospital. Bootle. Everton got it bad. The destructors got one on the decontamination part. 4 men killed. Fallowfield Road got one. Terrible digging them out.
Winchfield Road gone. Harry Lambert’s home gone (they were all out) and a time action in Deepfield Rd at the bottom of Grant Avenue. In the early hours of Sunday morning they hit on ammunition dumps and it was hell even after the all clear. The shells were going off. The air has been full of cordite falling like fine snow all day yesterday. But I think it has cleared now. I have just swilled it away although I am afraid to use much water as they need it. All the electric went altogether. Not a Car ran in Liverpool yesterday. They have started about 12 o’clock today running part way. The place is all plastered with unexploded bombs. It was full daylight before the All Clear went on Sunday morning. Last night they started coming over in hundreds. They put up a barrage. as never heard before and gave them hell. We were thankful to hear it and we should have had the same the other nights. Without that barrage they would have finished the job of flooring Liverpool. They were coming in swarms. Dad had to go to work straight after the All Clear. 5 O’clock this morning. I believe they brought guns and men into Liverpool yesterday. I hope you can understand this letter but we are all all in. Nora has gone to work. She spent all night with her head on my knee in the shelter. Tired out. Corrie at Crawford’s is burnt out. I wrote to you on Sat so I hope you have got the letters. We have had no letter from you for over a week. Mrs Foster is really on her holidays but she has walked to town to find out what Lewis’ are doing about the employees. Lodge Lane got it bad. Your dad’s driver of Sat. was killed Sat. night. Both legs off and died on the way to hospital. He lived in Riston St Lodge Lane. I am going to try to get a rest now. Dad is in bed (in his break). He is out at 4 O’clock. All our love.
Mam, Dad and Nora.
