I remember there being lots of barrage balloons near where I lived and one in particular which was always having problems and was lowered and raised so we called it Waltzing Matilda.I lived in a tenemant and when the sirens went for an air raid we went to "the close",the walls were supported by wooden beams and the "baffle wall" was made of ordinary bricks which protected the opening to the close. We went to an air eriad shelter in the school (Albert)playground. People who lived near them had furnished them and one night a lone raider came over and we were told it was "Hess",we saw the plane get hit and come down at Eaglesham.
