Sitting at home in the living room with the family. The air raid siren had sounded. There was a tapping on the window, and a voice boomed out from our ARP man 'Get that light out!' So we all jumped up, Dad pulled the curtains, the rest of us checked that all the other windows were blacked out. Worrying if there would any repercussions, if he reported this, being next to Birtley Royal Ordnance Factory. Two minutes later there was another tap at the window. Father went to investigate the tapping and it was the same ARP man (Len Elliot) at the window and he asked Dad 'Could you please open the curtains a little and show a some light for a moment, till I find my way out of the garden?
