Edwina鈥檚 parents owned the Bull in London Road, Bedford, during the war. Before she dies, she told me about living there. A bomb exploded in the pub garden one night when she was in bed. They were trying to target the American Stores base which is where the Jordan鈥檚 factory now is. Her mother rushed into her bedroom to discover her fast asleep under her eiderdown which was completely covered in shattered glass from her leaded back bedroom window.
She also remembered going to the base round the corner where her father had an agreement, and a special barter system was set up for them to get special items of food etc to help with the rationing.
