Upon arrival in Buckinghamshire we were deloused immediately, with powder of some kind being pumped over certain parts! Next we were taken along to some aircraft hanger where to our surprise, some very kind W.A.A.F.personnel waited upon us at long tables covered with all manner of goodies!
Suffice it to say, not very much was consumed and the girls were astonished by this. They then suggested that we were too shy to eat. For my own part, I did find it very strange being back amongst women again!
For two days now we were in a depot where records, etc. had to be checked and a very exciting chat about the the new United Nations which had been proposed was given.
Finally, an officer asked me if I wished to remain in the Army. My reply 'No thank you Sir' was received with no undue surprise. He said that he thought I would have had enough of it all. Finally we were free to go home once more.
On 26th May I was back in the area of the good old Westbury White Horse again and my hometown of Trowbridge, where I was born.
However the peace and quiet had a strange effect on me, in that I felt that I wanted to do something dangerous.
An aunt of mine came chasing up from Weston-s- Mare to welcome me home, saying that it was the best birthday present she ever had. My mother said that she could hardly recognise me! That's malnutrition for you.
According to my calculations, I had been away from home some 2,045 days of which some 833 days were endured in the four POW camps - two in Italy, one in each of Eastern Germany and Czechoslovakia.
