We used to go to the Yorkshire coast to visit my father (who was stationed there), and my mother and I stayed in a farm house. I remember the farmer鈥檚 wife telling us to get under the kitchen table when the planes flew over and when they started shelling we went down to the cellar.
On one trip we had lunch at the Station Hotel in Hull, and I can recall looking up to find blue sky - the ceiling had disappeared in a recent bombing raid and there was no roof on the restaurant!
Eventually it was deemed too dangerous for me to continue visiting my father, and my mother would visit him by herself. On his return it was difficult to remember who he was.
