My grandparents, John and Catherine McManus, lived in Stockport during the war. My grandmother was staying in the air raid shelters in the caves in Stockport during an air raid. My grandfather was in the Home Guard and came home during the air raid. He had just got into the house and found that only the dog was at home. A few minutes later he heard the whistle of an approaching bomb and made a dash for the cellar door. He nearly got stuck in the doorway with the dog who also went into the cellar. The bomb hit the corner of the house. The fire, which had been burning in the grate was blown out of the fireplace into the middle of the room. Fortunately he managed to put the fire out. All the windows of the house were blown out, but the house was saved.
