Like most lads of my age we were used to bombs living in London, I was in fact a civil defence messenger with the A.R.P. before I joined the Royal Navy in April 1942.
After training I was drafted to a landing craft tank. We were sent to the mediterrian in Early 1943.
My first taste of action was landing on Pantelleria June 11th everything seemed very quite at first, standing on deck I remarked to a stoker that had seen some action, how easy it was, he remarked there is plenty of time for action, how right he was, we were bombed and machine gunned, it was very frightening.
We landed our troops sometime later we saw white flags coming towards the harbour, these were Italians who had been looking after a radio station. We loaded the prisoners and took them back to North Africa.
From then on until the end of the war we took part in the following landings.,
10th July Sciliy
3rd September Ivasion of Italy
22nd January 1944 Anzio
17th June 1944 Elba
15th August 1944 South Of France
During 1944 we were sent to the Theadriatir
to assis Marshall Tito's partisans, we landed his troops and supplies (including horses) on the off shore islands.
The war over we stayed in the med until October 1945, transporting United Nations Relief. I arrived back in the UK in November 1945 having travelled over land by train from the South of France.
I was awarded the 'Distinguised Service Medal' for Distisguised Service in Europe and I left the Royal Navy in 1946
