My dad Frank Rowe was stationed at St Anthony Head as a bombardier with the Royal Artillary during the Second World War. The remains of the gun battery are still able to be viewed now owned by the National Trust.
We were living at St Columb Road at this time and on occassions dad was allowed a 48 hour pass, he would then hitch hike home.
On one such occasion he was offered a lift in a hearse. Dad being over 6ft tall managed to squeeze in behind the driver and passenger, after a few miles dad began to fidgit and feel uncomfortable - he said to the driver - "Its not very comfortable back here", the driver looked over his shoulder and said - "Soldier yours is the first complaint we have had."
