In the year l940-41 I had returned home early from being an evacuee. I was the only child at home soon was given a job to do: I sat on top of the Anderson Shelter and cast my eyes southwards as soon as I saw the barrage balloons going up, it was my job to ring a large bell. This was the signal for a group of housewives to get out of the house and take cover, within a very short time the enemy aircraft arrived. As a 9 year old I felt very important the fact that I had no chums to play with did not matter, the excitement of the trust put on me was imense and and to this day I have always felt it played a very big part in my developement.
