Charles Page was a member of a wireless observation unit, which meant he advanced ahead of the main fighting force setting up Observation Posts and reporting on enemy movement in the jungle, which in the main consisted of aircraft but the occasional troop movement was reported. To achieve this, his patrol had to cut their way through the dense jungle. There were 9 people in his section and they carried their own rations (mostly in tins) and water. More supplies were airlifted in.
Charles spent 3 years in the Far East, initially fighting on the Imphal Front, eventually being posted to 656 Sqn RAF (which was a joint Army/RAF Unit) on the Arachan Front.
After VJ day his unit was an advance party, which went into Bangkok. It was still populated by armed Japanese soldiers who eventually laid down their arms and surrendered.
Charles main memories of the Far East are of leeches and the humidity.
