I was 3 years old when the war started. I lived in South London. My sister and I were evacuated to a small village in Devon. My father went abroad in the army for the whole of the war. My Mother worked in London. My Mother would come down to check where we were living. Some people used to take evacuees in their home for the money. There were three homes my Mother took us out of as we were not being treated properly. The forth home we stayed at for the remaining of the war. The people we stayed with were a Welsh couple. The man worked on the railway lines. When there were air raids at night we had a large steel table and we used to get under it for protection.
