In September 1939 I was in Belgium. Other British people were returning to England in anticipation of war and I was one of the last to leave.
I crossed the channel on The Princess Charlotte. On its return trip and just before war was officially declared the boat was sunk by a German submarine.
A lucky escape for me but not for the poor Belgians returning home, all of whom were killed.
