As Christmas approached one year, a friend was visiting and I asked her if she would like to see our Christmas dinner! I took her to a coop and ran to where my dad was fattening a cockerel, which he had bought from a neighbour. She was expecting to see the bird dead and plucked, also drawn! And talking of ‘oven ready’ I was chatting to the fellows on the searchlight training post in a field one day when they told me they had caught and killed a rabbit, but they didn’t know what to do with it! Yes they were surprised when they saw that I could gut and skin it!
