My family lived in Tooting Bec and we were bombed out. Because of this we were moved to Byfleet where we lived in part of a Stately Home. From there we moved to a large shared house in Woking.

At the age of three my brother and myself were sent to nursery school because my mother was working in munitions and my father was an ARP warden in London.

My memory of nursery was that during an air raid we were taken next door to the church. During the raids we were read stories by one of the senior girls from the school. The one teacher at the school was to be found in the air raid shelter in the fire station across the road.

To this day I can still remember the taste of the dust and grit produced by the bombing.

One day my father took me outside to see a Buzz bomb, which had been 'flipped' and was flying off course, pass over our house. The 'buzz land' on a local nursery garden five miles away and flattened all the greenhouse. It also loosened our gatepost.

We used to sleep in an iron cage structure. There would be 4 children in the 'cage.'
