My first sight of death during service was after my first posting to a small airstrip in Kiddlington Oxfordshire. We initially were servicing Blenheim Bobmbers straight from the factories in preparation for active service. Within a few miles of the airstrip was Upper Heford Aerodrome. On this drome were pilots being trained to fly Hampden Bombers. They were very difficult to fly so there were quite a few casualties, some fatal. Although we were not trained in firefighting the whole unit, being small. assisted at all the crashes. We often dragged pilots from these air crashes. Many lives were saved, but many were lost. Going virtually from initial training to this was quite hair-raising, especially seeing those brave men suffer and die before our eyes and not being able to save them.
