During WW2 I served in the WAAF. At the time I was stationed at Hornchurch in Essex which was home to a Spitfire squadron.

One day the Group Captain called me over to his table in the Officers' Mess where I worked and asked me if I would like to be a Corporal - unpaid. I said "No sir, there is no hurry, I'll wait until there is a vacancy and be paid for it".

Three weeks later I was made up to Corporal - with pay!
