Norman Stanley Grey (left) and Jimmy Ewing, Sierra Leone, c 1943
My father, who died in 2003, was born in 1920 in Birkenhead and did his Shipwright's apprentice at Cammell Lairds. Because of his trade he was enlisted as a non-commissioned officer in 1943 under the "AIS (AE)Act 1939 according to his Certificate of Service. He spent 2 years in Sierra Leone serving on the HMS Pembroke and HMS Eland. He was invalided out of the Royal Navy at the end of the war as he caught malaria which he said affected his health for the rest of his life. One of the signatures on the conduct portion of his Certificate of Service is M J Hawkins but the others are indecipherable.
