My grandfather, Jack, was working at Sholden near Deal, on the Sandwich side. He was working for a carpentry firm from Ramsgate to whom he was apprenticed.
The work they were carrying out was to construct black-out shutters for Tormore House which was being used as a barracks for marine recruits, and had previously been a Girl's school.
On the day in question, a group, including my grandfather were working on the first floor of the house. A number of German bombers, returning from a raid, were shot at and one was hit. This plane, a Dornier, landed on the Sandwich flats. My grandfather and a couple of other chaps saw the plane go down, about half a mile away, and decided to go and have a look.
On their way there they weren't really sure what was in their minds, and realised they probably shouldn't be going there are troops were already on their way to intercept any surviving crew!
When they got closer a member of the crew, over 6ft tall, got out of the plane with a revolver in his hand. At this point my grandfather and his friends decided that this was "enough" and turned and ran all the way back to the safety of the base! Although they didn't realise it at the time, it turned out that the German crew member was more scared than they were.
