Extract from a letter

9th Oct. 44.

Dear Eric

Thanks for yours, received in the caravan. I expect you are thinking what am awful sister I am, not even remembering your birthday and you in Belgium, etc. — Well, I must say, I have thought about your birthday, & after enquiring just what you need etc., from Mother, I understand she may get you a sleeping bag and send me the bill, etc., - So please forgive my apparent neglect. Belgium and the war seems very far away, and the fact that you are there, only, seems to stand out. I could visualize you when our troops first landed, and when there was a lot of talk etc., about things — but this new term has got me caught up in a new job where I work so hard I haven’t time…..
