I lived in Northborough Road Sw16 from before the war untill I joined the Army.
My father was an early recruit to the Air Raid Wardens, and as a youngster I helped assemble the civilian gas masks, and later the add on canister which was found neccessary.
At the outbreak of War I trained with many others to extinguish incendary bombs, learning how no 1 crawed towards the burning bomb directing the mist spray, produced by the action of No 2 pumping the stirrup pump. I remember the first exploding burning bombs falling in the recreation ground in northborough Road, a real shock! it is ammusing now to recollect that, our revised instructions were that No1 should find a dustbin lid and crawl towards the bomb with nozzle in right hand hand and dustbin lid in left hand held in front of one to afford protection! how you crawl without the use of your hands was not explained.
I lived there through out the war including the time when V1s and V2s were arriving.
I later joined the Army trained as a Radio Operater at Whitby Yorks, was sent to India and finished my time in Burma in 17th Indian Div. Signals, discharged Feuary 1948
