I was surprised to read of the account of the apprentice ship-builder in Lowestot. As he would know Lowestoft's HMS Europa was the main base for the Patrol Service and of course most of us Patrol Service ratings would know Lowestoft reasonably well. I never knew of a ship-builders yars where minesweepers were built.
Nor did I ever see ASDEC gear on the forecastle of any sweeper. What we had forward was an acoustic hammer Which, lifting it up and over the bows could be a bit tricky especially in a choppy sea.
The only time I served on a sweeper with ASDEC gear was when I was stationed in Iceland at Rejkavik on the 'OPHELIA' a converted deep sea fishing trawler.
