This story was told to East Ayrshire staff at their tea party on the 11th June 2004 by Mr William Hamilton from Kilmarnock.

As a child I visited my Great Aunt’s farm (New Bogside) at Gatehead. German and Italian prisoner of war were used to supplement the farm labour. One German POW carved planes out of wood and he would torment me that German planes were better than British (I was 4 years old). He eventually carved me a spitfire – I was delighted. My great aunt corresponded for years after the war with some of the POWs.
