My story starts in Plymouth. During the Blitz, it soon became clear that we had to leave our home. We were then called evacuees. We were sent to Triro, then taken to a farm to our new home. But alas we soon found out that there was no tap water, only water from a well for drinking only.Washing was done in the dirty pond. After two weeks, we all had scabies.
After that the farm had no electricity,so all light was a matter of oil or candles.
I was sent upstairs to babysit during this task. I put the candle behind my back to see if the baby would cry. In doing this, I set fire to my clothes and spent 12 months in Redruth hospital and lost the sight of my right eye.
This is what being an evacuee is to me.
