I lived in Reading during World War II — on day, as a birthday treat, I went with my mother and two sisters to the Central Cinema to see ‘Bambi’. The film was interrupted by an air raid and the cinema was evacuated. We found when we came out that Reading Town Hall and the People’s Pantry — just 100 yards away had been BOMBED. Many people had been injured, but thank God that we had escaped with a Near Miss!
