I can remember during the war that a man would come round at night. He would quietly knock on the back door, and would have a long sack with him. In this sack he would have tinned peaches, pears, and pineapples. We would then buy them from him. I think we paid him with points, possibly from the ration coupons.
We just accepted it as a normal form of commerce. As children we had no concept of the Black Market. We just wanted sweet things like tinned peaches!
I can also remember that Norwich Market had a heap of nylons. You could pick a pair for a shilling. I remember that you got them home hoping you had picked two that looked the same colour! Where they came from, or why they were in a pile, I don鈥檛 know.
