Land Army memories 鈥� Irene Renvoize

I came out to the country with a friend to get a bit of 鈥渇resh air鈥� and was persuaded by her to join the Land Army. I thought it would be 鈥渁 bit of a lark鈥� but found it was very much harder work than I had thought. I really liked the uniform, and chose twill rather than corduroy trousers. The berets and soft shirts (made of poplin) were lovely. As we got very tired, we didn鈥檛 want to do much in the evenings, but at weekends we went into Woodbridge. We did not think much of the local young men, but we were impressed by the Americans stationed nearbye. I shared a room with one girl at the top of the house, and made good friends at Sutton Hoo and learned a lot about life.
