During the war I lived in Edenthorpe near Doncaster and from 1940 — 45 I attended Thorne Grammar School which was a 7 mile journey by special bus.

I remember at 9 years old listening to the wireless when war was declared. We had air raids but they were usually aimed at Sheffield although a couple of stray bombs landed in the village. We never really went short as Dad had a big allotment and mother was very organised. At the end of the war I remember my sister, who was 19 then, going to London for the victory celebration.
