My grandad was an NCO in the 50th Company, Pioneer Corps. Unfortunatley he passed away some years ago but there are several funny stories from his war service. The best one was when he was in leave in Belgium and he saved up all his money to send my gran a massive box of Belgian choclates. When they arrived my great gran said they could be a booby trap from Hitler, that she should not open them however much she liked sweets and she should bury them in the garden so she did. When my grandad came home and asked if she liked the chocs my gran lied and said they were very nice! Another time my gran and grandad, slightly eccentric it has to be said, went to a party in aid of war funds. It was called a tramps tea party but they didnt realise they didnt have to dress as tramps and were thrown out! One of the last stories is how my Grandad almost killed himself. He was apparently on guard at a camp when he was walking around, his rifle on his shoulder with the bayonet fixed. Suddenley all the lights went out in the camp. The next day they found the electricity wire had been cut and they put it down to sabotage. Actually what happened was that my grandad's bayonet had cut through the wire and luckily he was not killed by the electricity going down the metal of the bayonet as there was a rubber band around handle that stopped it so without that I wouldnt be here today to tell the story for him. I shall have to add some more of his exploits, some of them daft it has to be said, later! Paul
