This story was submitted to the People's War website by Claire Shaw on behalf of Mrs Patricia C Pascoe, the author and has been added to the site with her permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

A wartime cure for a chesty cough and indeed, whooping cough was to wear a "tarred rope" necklace around one's throat. Breathing in the tar was very advantageous and cleared the lungs.
