This story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War site by Mike Millington of CSV on behalf of Betty Hoon and has been added to the site with her permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

The war actually started on my 16th birthday, some present. We had to carry gas masks with us wherever we went. One night I was out with my boyfriend and we went down to Westport Lake. We were canoodling down there for quite a while and then we started to walk back home. Halfway back I suddenly realised I鈥檇 left my gasmask by the lake so he had to run all the way back and get it for me, otherwise my mother would have known what we鈥檇 been up to.
