My mother told me this about her experiences as an evacuee. My mother was born in 1935 and was evacuated with her younger brother, Stuart to a mining village in Wales. I remember that she had really loved the school and had a very close friend. In the family that she was placed with, the father was a nice person, very quiet and gentle. The mother however was cruel. Although she was very religious and always carried a Bible with her, in private she was not kind at all. Her mother would send food parcels for her and her brother but the woman she was evacuated to would take them and give them to her son. She also did not pass on any letters that were sent. My mother thought that something had happened to her and so she wrote a letter telling all that was happening and gave it to a friend in her class to post. On receiving this, her mother came straight to Wales and took them back with her.
