I lived in Stockport with my mother and 2 younger sisters. I was 14 years old when my mother was taken to Stepping Hill hospital with appendicitis so my grandfather came to look after us as I lost my father when I was very young.
One night the sirens went and some minutes later we heard a loud heavy drumming sound and then a deadly silence. There was a blast of wind followed by a terrific explosion. Every door in the house blew open followed by a crashing of pot and pans. It happened so fast and was so unexpected we had no time to go to the shelter, in fact this proved to be one of the few V.I. (nicknamed Dooble Bug)bombs to land in this part of the country.
Information reached the hospital that a bomb had landed near the new school on Garners Lane which was where we lived. My mother was going hairless with worry until we visited her in the afternoon as she thought we had been bombed!
