In the London Blitz, my father-in-law was working on the locks in the Albert Dock, when a floating mine was sighted inside the dock itself.
He was clever with ropes and managed to lassoe it! To prevent it from touching the side of the dock and exploding he hung on and kept the mine steady, while a dock policeman rang the Bomb Disposal Unit.
In fact, his quick thinking saved the day and he was given a citation by the Port of London Authority — the policeman, who’d hardly done anything was awarded a medal for bravery!
