I would have been about 4 years old standing in the middle of Northampton waiting for a bus with my mom. A lady came up and whispered something in my mothers ear. My mom grabbed my hand and my feet hardly touched the ground as she rushed me back to Northampton market square. What this lady had told my mom was that there was a man selling bananas. The catch was that the buyer had to have a child with them. We were allowed to buy 3 bananas after my mom had pushed me forward. I can remember all the way home on the bus I kept asking my mom what they were!
When we got home my mom mashed one of the bananas with a bit of sugar and the top of the milk.
I remember we had all our milk delivered in a churn on the back of a 2 wheel cart. We had to ladle out the milk from the churns into our own jug. Of course we didn't have a fridge because there just weren't any in those days!
If Hitler had done his homework right and had better knowledge of our country you would have thought he would have bombed the hell out of Northampton! He would have grounded the Army in one go as this is where all their boots were made. There seemed to be a boot maker on every corner all churning out boots.
