All through the war, every Sunday I listened to Vera Lynn on the wireless. Messages were read out from servicemen. I was married with two little girls. My husband was in the navy. He was killed in 1942.
I lived about 5 miles from Manchester and I remember seeing Manchester blaze from the bombs. When my mothers house was bombed there were no casualties but she had no electricity. She had to walk three miles to my house to cook her dinner.
I remember hearing the 鈥渄oodle bug 鈥渂ombs, waiting to hear where they would drop. We had a Morrison shelter in the kitchen.
At school, children were given Horlicks tablets and orange juice.
I made the children 鈥淪iren suits out of old coats 鈥 they thought they were the 鈥渂ee鈥檚 knees鈥 and I remember the sponge cake I used to make with liquid paraffin 鈥 delicious!
